In December, Milli Gimnastika Arenasi (National Gymnastics Arena) will host one more Continental Championships. Immediately after the Men's Artistic Gymnastics competitions, this time, the arena will open its doors to female gymnasts.
The 33rd Women's Artistic Gymnastics European Championships is scheduled for December 17-20.
304 gymnasts from 38 countries are expected to participate in this championships. 157 seniors and 147 juniors from them will join the competition in order to become Continental Champion. 699 people are expected to visit the country to take part in the event.
The Women's Continental Championships was previously planned for April 30 - May 3 in Paris (France). However, the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The French Gymnastics Federation said they had not been able to hold the Championships at a later date.
After that, at the request of Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, European Gymnastics decided to hold the competition in Baku.
President of the European Gymnastics Farid Gayibov, speaking about the new dates of the Championships, stated that these decisions had been taken based on the information received from National Federations and consideration of the current situation in Europe. “At the moment, we think that it is possible to organize these events in fall. However, European Gymnastics will continue to evaluate the situation during the next months. Should the situation not be considered safe enough anymore at a later date, we will react accordingly. The health of the gymnasts, coaches, spectators remains our main concern.”
The competition format will remain the same as originally planned and it will be qualifying for the Olympic Games. Thus, the event will give to some eligible gymnasts, who have not yet qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, a last chance to qualify.
